Increase Website Traffic Using Google Analytics

By Mike Munter on April 03, 2012

Google analytics provides you with a wealth of information about your site, including number of visitors, bounce rate and other important indicators that will help you improve your site’s conversion rate.  But did you know that you can use the information in Google Analytics to increase website traffic?

In this article, I’m going to show you step-by-step how you can go into Google Analytics and extract valuable keyword information, check your current website ranking and build links to easily improve your ranking.

Step 1 – Find Keywords You Are Already Ranking For

You will need to have had Google Analytics installed on your site for several months – the longer the better – to really take advantage of this method.

Open up your Google Analytics account and go into your Traffic Sources Overview.  From there, go into your Google organic traffic.  If you are using the old version of Google Analytics, this will bring up a list of the keywords people are typing into Google in order to find your site.

Now, what I do is expand the list to look at the top 100+ keywords that people are finding my site for.  Look through the list for the keyword phrases that you are not trying to rank for.  These are the golden nugget phrases that people are finding you for that you would not otherwise know about.  The picture below shows an example from my site at mikemunterseo.com:

Ideally, look for phrases that have a decent search volume and a high commercial value.  In the example above, I see that one person found my site for the keyword “website conversion optimization”.  I know that I have a page on my site with package pricing for this service and I know it gets decent traffic, so I think this is a great term to work on.

Step 2 To Increase Website Traffic – Find Your Site For The Keyword

Now, go to Google and type in the keyword.  For me, I’ll be typing “website conversion optimization” – no quotes – and then searching.

I have to scan through to page 4 to find the result I am looking for.  See photo below:

Now, you might be thinking, “No one goes to page 4 to find search results!”  You are probably right; however, there is a chance that someone did go digging that far to find my site.  A more likely scenario is that my site just happened to be on page 1 of search results at the time this searcher found me.  Since sites bounce around from time to time, this is more likely what happened.  Either way, it does not matter.

The important thing here is that we have discovered a page on our website that is ranking for a keyword that we may not have been previously been doing any search engine optimization for.

Step 3 To Increase Website Traffic – Build Links To Boost The Keyword

The third step is to promote this page of content by building backlinks to it, using the keyword phrase, “website conversion optimization” as the anchor text.

One great way to get a link back to your site is go back to Google and search for other blog sites that are relevant to your own.  Since my site is about SEO, I would probably enter something like “SEO blog guest post” into Google to find sites that might accept a guest blog post from me.  I would then contact various site owners to see if I can post an article on their site, in exchange for a link.  Once I have approval, I could write the article and include my keyword with a link back to my site, using proper HTML syntax.  For my example, the HTML syntax would look like this:

<a href=”http://mikemunterseo.com/affordable-small-business-seo-packages/website-conversion-optimization/”>website conversion optimization</a>

Writing one article with one link like this may or may not be enough to move your site up in Google.  You will need to monitor your search ranking to see how you are doing over time.  If need be, you may need to submit your articles or look for other link building methods to help you rank higher. Or, if you do not have the time to do it yourself, you can hire a small business SEO consultant to help you with link building.

Imagine the impact you can make on your site’s traffic if you repeat this process for several different keywords!  The idea is to take what is already working and make it better.

I would love to help you improve your small business website rankings.  Just give me a call or send me an email.
